Recent garage break ins

Dear Residents

I am sending this message  to talk about a simple but vital part of crime prevention—shed and garage security.

We often focus on protecting the main areas of our homes, but criminals are increasingly targeting outbuildings—sheds, garages, and garden storage units—because they’re typically easier to access and full of valuable items like bikes, power tools, and lawn equipment.

These types of crimes are often crimes of opportunity. And the good news is, we can prevent the vast majority of them with some basic, proactive steps.

What Can You Do?

  Secure the structure: Fit solid, weatherproof locks on all doors and windows. Use tamper-proof hinges and anchor sheds to concrete bases if possible. Remember—cheap padlocks are easy to break.

  Light it up: Motion-sensor lighting around outbuildings is a powerful deterrent. Criminals do not want to be seen.

  Install cameras: Even a basic CCTV or video doorbell system facing your garage or shed can scare off would-be thieves and help us with investigations if something does happen.

  Mark and register your property: Use a UV pen or etching tool to mark your postcode and house number on tools, bikes, and valuables. Register them on national property databases like Immobilise. This makes recovery far more likely if stolen.

  Don’t leave tools out: We often find that burglars use tools found on the property—left in open sheds or on lawns—to break into homes or other areas. Lock everything away when it’s not in use.

  Work with your neighbours: A watchful neighbour is one of the best deterrents there is. Join or start a neighbourhood watch group if one isn’t already active.

The Benefits

Why is this important?

  First and foremost, it prevents crime. Criminals will avoid hard targets and move on when they see visible security measures.

  It reduces the risk of escalation—a shed break-in can be a stepping stone to a more serious burglary.

  It brings peace of mind. Feeling safe in your own space is a right, not a luxury.

  And it strengthens our partnership between the community and the police. When we all do our part, we make our neighbourhoods safer and less attractive to criminals.

Northamptonshire Police are committed to supporting you. If you ever need advice on home or shed security, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We can offer guidance, free home security checks in some areas, and connect you with local resources.

In closing, I want to remind you: crime prevention starts at home, and it starts with awareness. Let’s work together to make sure your shed or garage isn’t the easy target criminals are looking for.

Thank you—and stay safe
