Winter Road Safety |
||
|
Dear Resident The recent bad weather has seen a few accidents where vehicles have slid in poor weather, be mindful some local roads, and road that have not be adopted by the local authority, such as on new estates, may not have been treated. Winter road safety means slowing down significantly, increasing stopping distances (up to 10x), using higher gears to avoid wheelspin (moving off in 2nd gear if needed), and braking/accelerating/steering gently to prevent skids, especially on ice where black ice is invisible and stopping distances are much longer, while also ensuring your vehicle is prepared for cold weather. Before You Drive Check Your Vehicle: Ensure tires are good (winter tires recommended), antifreeze is topped up, lights work, and you have de-icer and warm clothes. Check Conditions: Listen to travel updates; avoid driving if conditions are severe. Pack Essentials: Carry blankets, first-aid, snacks, and warm footwear. Driving in Snow & Ice Slow Down: Reduce speed and leave much more space (up to 10 times more) between you and the car ahead. Gentle Inputs: Accelerate, brake, and steer smoothly; avoid sudden movements. High Gear: Use the highest gear possible to maintain traction and avoid wheelspin; some cars have a "winter mode". Starting on Hills: Leave plenty of room to maintain speed; use low gears; avoid stopping if possible. Going Downhill: Use a low gear to let engine compression slow you down, and brake gently. Headlights: Use dipped headlights in heavy snow for visibility. Black Ice: Be wary of bridges and overpasses which freeze first; it's invisible and dangerous. If You Skid Don't Panic: Take your foot off the accelerator. Steer Gently: Steer into the skid (e.g., if the rear slides right, steer right). No Sudden Braking: Do not stamp on the brakes; ease off the accelerator. If Stuck in Snow Don't Spin Wheels: This digs you in deeper. Rock Gently: Use a high gear and gently move forward/backward to creep out. Clear Snow: Shovel snow away from wheels and the car's underside. General Rules Stay In: If stuck, stay in your vehicle unless help is very close. Avoid Snowplows: Never overtake them; their visibility is poor. | ||
